Monkey: Journey To The West.
Monkey, or Sun Wukong, is coming to Manchester this summer. This live production, created by Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and Chen Shi – Zheng, will open the Manchester International Festival on June 28.
The production is based upon the Monkey King, perhaps the central character of all Chinese literature and based upon 2000 years of storytelling. Jamie Hewlett has created a stunning universe to help tell this epic story. His sets will soar from the heavens to the depths of the sea, and take the audience with them.
However, it’s not all majestic scenery. Monkey is really cool at Kung-Fu, so the show will also provide some “kick ass” entertainment value. Pop culture vultures may have seen the Japanese television series from the late seventies. Anyone who has knows that Monkey can more or less do anything, from shape changing to cloud flying.
Albarn and Hewlett actually travelled to China , to carry out some real world research for the show. Fans of Gorillaz will know just how talented these two people are. However, for this production they are working with the Theatre du Chatelet and The State Opera House Berlin. This show will rock.
