Movie news

Control, the new biopic of Joy Division front man Ian Curtis, has been chosen to open the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film is directed by Anton Corbijn. Corbijn is famous for photography, working with rock greats such as U2, Nirvana and Depeche Mode.

The new movie is all about the final years of Ian Curtis. Sadly, Ian committed suicide in 1980. The band were due to fly out to America the next day.

In the music industry and particularly in Manchester, Joy Division are seen as one of the most influential bands in recent decades. Bands like Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers are all good examples of this influence.

The news is also a shot in the arm for British movies, with no UK films making it into the competition itself. Cannes is a really prestigious film festival, which takes place every year in the south of France.
