Games, gamers and the real world

It’s official, violent video games do not make you violent. The British Board of Film Classification, who rate all new video games, have proven that gamers can separate the virtual world from real life.

The BBFC have carried out some research, based on interviews with gamers, parents and industry types. A lot of the research asked questions about violent games, such as Manhunt. In the survey gamers stated that they enjoyed the blood, gore and killing because it was so different to real life.

The Virginia Tech spree killing has resulted in some people asking if there is a link between violent games and violent people. This survey, organized by such an important body, suggests there is not a connection. However, the research did find that some of the games are a little addictive, particularly amongst teenage boys. Gaming from dawn until dusk cannot be good for anyone.

Rockstar Games, the company responsible for the Grand Theft Auto series, is now seen as the trial blazer for this type of game. Grand Theft Auto IV, which is coming out later this year, looks like it will raise the bar yet again for virtual mayhem. The BBFC findings will probably spur the guys at Rockstar on.
